Double post from the two-stroke page.
I get some good traffic over here from the PentonUSA.org folks so every now and then I like to go over and see what they're up to. Great bunch of folks and if you're even remotely interested in old Penton or KTM motorcycles (or any old dirtbike from that era) then go pay em a vist. Great Stuff!
Anyway while I was snooping around over there I stumbled across this beauty. I love this sort of treatment. I was very tempted to buy a similarly built bike a while back that was based on an XT500. It's one of the styles of bikes that really shine when "modernized". Power should NOT be a problem and I imagine she handles brilliantly.
Mr JC Hubbard had the breakdown in his post as follows:
'77 Penton 175 Engine with Lectron Carb
'77 Penton MC5 Frame & Tank
'80 KTM 175 Swingarm
'89 KTM GS 125 Forks, Wheels, Brakes
'78 KTM Torque Pipe
Trail Tech Cannondale Odo/Speedo
Magura Hymec Hydraulic Clutch
Magura 167 Front Brake Master
Kenda Tires

Toyota Unveils Compact Dedicated Hybrid Concept
DETROIT, January 11, 2010---Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A, Inc., today unveiled the FT-CH dedicated hybrid concept at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit. The FT-CH is a concept that would address Toyota’s stated strategy to offer a wider variety of conventional hybrid choices to its customers, as it begins to introduce plug-in hybrids (PHVs) and battery electrics (BEVs) in model year 2012, and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (FCHVs) in 2015 in global markets.
“Within the next 10 to 20 years, we will not only reach peak oil we will enter a period where demand for all liquid fuels will exceed supply,” said Jim Lentz, TMS president. “A century after the invention of the automobile, we must re-invent it with powertrains that significantly reduce or eliminate the use of conventional petroleum fuels. One of many alternatives is through what is commonly called the electrification of the automobile. By far, the single most successful example of this has been the gas-electric hybrid.
The CH stands for compact hybrid as in compact class and it’s a concept that can best be defined by comparing it with the mid-size class Prius. The FT-CH captures the spirit and functionality of a car that thrives in the inner-city environment; sized right to be nimble, responsive and maneuverable.

WORLD PREMIERE: MITSUBISHI CONCEPT PX-MiEV
Powered by the new Mitsubishi Plug-in Hybrid System, which significantly extends
the frequency a hybrid vehicle is driven in EV mode, the Mitsubishi Concept-PX*
MiEV† returns fuel economy in excess of 50 km/litre. The Mitsubishi Concept
PX-MiEV is a new-generation concept car that balances high environmental
performance with running performance by utilizing differential motors and
Mitsubishi's all-new S-AWC (Super All Wheel Control), that utilises E-AYC
(Electric-powered Active Yaw Control) which transfers torque to the rear left
and right wheels. Other features include Mitsubishi's cocochi-interior**, which
provides occupants with a comfortable cabin environment, as well as many of the
latest safety technologies.
* PX: Plug-in hybrid crossover. † MiEV: Mitsubishi innovative Electric Vehicle
** "cocochi" is a pun on the Japanese word for "cosy"
WORLD PREMIERE: i-MiEV CARGO
Derived from the production i-MiEV, this concept maximises the outstanding
environmental performance and economic efficiency characteristics that define
the EV and at the same time adds a generous amount of rear free space to extend
the range of uses to which it can be put by corporate users and self-employed
operators in particular. The rear space features space-efficient cubic
dimensions to allow the user to exercise their imagination fully in adapting it
for whatever use he/she chooses. The result is a concept for an EV that meets
user needs for a variety of situations: from business use, where maximum payload
space is required, to leisure and other individual owner uses.
MITSUBISHI CONCEPT PX-MiEV (SHOW MODEL)
1. Design
Solid, Safe, and Simple were the keywords which drove the development of an
exterior design suitable for a next-generation crossover that creates simple
appearance from which all extraneous elements have been pared and that is free
of the "rugged" elements typical in conventional SUVs. The headlamps and rear
combination lamps use LED emitters that give the car an innovative and modern
appearance as well as delivering better environmental performance with their
reduced power consumption. The body uses a newly-developed metal colour that
gives the car a metal shell-like appearance. Combining elements of both spoke
and dish styling, the road wheel design highlights an unprecedented new look to
the body as well improving brake cooling and aerodynamic performance.
The interior was designed to give an image of an airplane cockpit to improve the
driver's concentration, with an instrument panel that envelops the passengers
and utilises seats that keep the passengers firmly in place. In addition, the
entire instrument panel and door trim utilise soft LED lighting that express the
vehicle's innovation and refinement.
2. Mitsubishi Plug-in Hybrid System
The Mitsubishi Concept PX-MiEV's front and rear wheels are powered by two
permanent magnet synchronous motors and is also fitted with a 1.6L DOHC MIVEC
gasoline engine which can power the front wheels as well as work as a generator.
In addition, the vehicle comes with the newly-developed Mitsubishi Plug-in
Hybrid System in which electronic circuitry automatically switches to the
optimum drive mode for different driving conditions and remaining energy in the
drive battery to extract maximum efficiency from the electric motors and from
the gasoline engine. The Mitsubishi Concept PX-MiEV also utilises the MiEV OS (MiEV
Operating System) which selects the optimum drive mode through integrated
control of the EV components and the gasoline engine as well as controls optimum
electrical charge and output in response to remaining battery energy through
constant monitoring of the drive battery. With these, a pleasing, safe, and
comfortable ride is achieved while conserving energy. In addition, to maximise
effective use of the drive battery, the vehicle is equipped with a power supply
mode that allows the use of some battery power to supply domestic appliances or
as an emergency power source in the event of a natural disaster.
* EV mode
At low to middle vehicle speeds the Mitsubishi Concept PX-MiEV's drive battery
powers the front motor using front-wheel drive. When driving on snow, in the
rain or in other low surface friction situations where maximum vehicle stability
is required, the system automatically switches to four-wheel drive mode by
feeding power to the rear wheel motor as well when sensors detect any front
wheel slip.
* Series hybrid mode
When the remaining energy in the drive battery falls to a predetermined level
the system starts the gasoline engine to generate electricity and automatically
switches to the series hybrid mode using the electricity generated to power the
motors. In this mode as well, the system switches to four-wheel drive by driving
the rear motor depending on driving conditions.
* Parallel hybrid mode
At higher vehicle speeds the car is supported by the gasoline engine which
operates more efficiently than the electric motors at high revolutions. In this
mode, the gasoline engine also helps drive the wheels. When the driver makes
sudden lane changes or other manoeuvres requiring greater vehicle stability the
system switches to four-wheel drive by bringing in the rear motor to drive the
rear wheels, improving stability. In addition when overtaking at higher speeds
or in other situations requiring faster acceleration the system switches in both
front and rear motors to provide additional power and assist the gasoline
engine, providing high acceleration.
* Regenerative mode
When the vehicle is slowing or coasting down a long descending slope the system
switches to regenerative mode in which kinetic energy reclaimed from the wheels
is stored in the drive battery.
* Charging mode
As with the production i-MiEV, Mitsubishi Concept PX-MiEV features a 3-way
battery charging system using either a 100-volt or a 200-volt domestic supply or
a high-power quick-charging station. The system also incorporates a Wireless
Charging Program feature that allows the owner to start charging the battery or
start the air conditioner at a preset time even when away from the vehicle.
* Power supply mode
As a way to maximise the usefulness of the power stored in the drive battery
based on the "Smart Grid Framework," which garners attention as a link in
tackling global warming, when not on the road the Mitsubishi Concept PX-MiEV
allows the owner to store electricity at night and then use that electricity via
the normal charging connector to power home appliances during the daytime when
domestic electricity consumption is highest. This allows the drive battery to be
used as a power source in the event of a natural disaster. Should the
electricity left in the battery fall below a predetermined level, the gasoline
engine starts up and works as generator to maintain the power supply at a fixed
level.
A 100-volt AC auxiliary socket in the rear luggage compartment also allows the
electricity stored in the drive battery to be used to power cooking or lighting
equipment and other appliances when camping or engaged in other leisure
activities.
3. Drive system
Mitsubishi Concept PX-MiEV uses Mitsubishi's S-AWC integrated vehicle handling
control system which is configured around an E-4WD (Electronically-powered
four-wheel drive) system that controls front and rear motor output to deliver
the optimum front/rear drive torque split. Under the integrated control of the
S-AWC system are E-AYC (Electric-powered Active Yaw Control), which controls
left/right torque split at the rear wheels and the degree of deceleration energy
recovery, ASC (Active Stability Control) and ABS (Anti-lock Brake System)
components.
Unlike the AYC system on the Lancer Evolution X which uses a wet multi-plate
clutch arrangement, E-AYC uses a differential motor to control rear wheel torque
split. The use of the differential motor makes for a high-efficiency system with
outstanding response and contributes to the on-demand handling and outstanding
vehicle stability that characterises the S-AWC system.
4. cocochi-interior
Some Mitsubishi Motors production cars already feature the cocochi-interior
which embraces occupants in a pleasantly comfortable cabin environment developed
to a "Clean, Stress-free and Safe & Reassuring" theme. For Mitsubishi Concept
PX-MiEV the cocochi-interior brings a number of new features including: seat
upholstery that deactivates allergens, breaks down VOC's (volatile organic
compounds) and offensive odour molecules as well as killing bacteria; glass that
shuts out UV-A radiation to protect skin from darkening and aging; and a
negative-ion aroma humidifier and oxygen enricher that improve comfort and
reduce fatigue. The original and the new cocochi-interior features provide a
cabin atmosphere that enhances occupant comfort as well as contributing to safer
operation of the vehicle.
5. Cabin heat load reducing technologies
The Mitsubishi Concept PX-MiEV uses a windshield that uses heat-reflecting glass
to reduce the amount of heat energy passing through and uses IR- (infrared ray)
blocking glass in the door windows. The body paint also incorporates
heat-reflective and insulation technology. Inside the vehicle the four seats are
individually air conditioned and cabin humidity is regulated. The adoption of
these heat load reducing technologies allows efficient climate control while
reducing power consumption to the absolute minimum in making for a very
comfortable occupant space.
6. Latest active safety technologies
The Mitsubishi Concept PX-MiEV showcases several new active safety technologies.
* The "New Multi-around Monitor" system uses cameras located at strategic points
on the body to provide the driver with a combined image of the full perimeter of
the vehicle. The combined image is displayed for the driver on a monitor from an
overhead view for improved safety around the perimeter of the vehicle.
* The Mitsubishi Concept PX-MiEV is equipped for the Driving Safety Support
System (DSSS (Level II)) currently being promoted by the Japanese National
Police Agency. In this advanced vehicle-infrastructure safety support system, an
on-board receiver picks up signals transmitted by roadside optical beacons and
the system urges the driver to take extra care when other vehicles or
pedestrians have been detected by roadside sensors and cameras at intersections
and pedestrian crossings.
* Employing a system that uses wireless technology to ascertain the position of
other vehicles and warn the driver when their proximity so requires, the
Mitsubishi Concept PX-MiEV also supports the Advanced Safety Vehicle 4 (ASV4)
project being promoted by the Road Transport Bureau of the Japanese Ministry of
Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.
* The vehicle is also fitted with a Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC*1)
system, employing the road-to-vehicle communications capabilities used in
Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) to determine the position of the vehicle and
whether it is parked or not.
*1 5.8 GHz band two-way wireless communication channels specifically designed
for automotive use.
7. Other features
The Mitsubishi Concept PX-MiEV is fitted with electronically-controlled air
suspension that gives the driver the choice of three ride height modes - Auto,
High, Low - for improved stability over poor surfaces or at high speeds and for
easier access to and from the vehicle.
The concept also uses a new-generation steering wheel switch and control layout
that offers outstanding usability and switch visibility for safer and less
stressful driving. Some of the audio, navigation, and climate control switches
are located on the steering wheel so that the driver can operate them without
having to take a hand off the wheel. Switch operation indicators located in the
instrument panel make it quicker and easier for the driver to visually check and
control the switch positions.
In the Driving Monitor System a camera mounted facing the driver monitors eye
movements to determine their level of alertness. If the system detects a
decrease in their concentration it issues not only audible but visual and
vibrational warnings and also emits a distinctive fragrance to alert him/her to
the situation.

2010 Chevrolet Volt Price Depend on Gas Price
Volt price will depend on gas price, GM says.
Although the conference call was supposed to be all about the progress on designing batteries for the Chevrolet Volt, the issue of the car's price loomed large in observer's minds.
With a potential asking price that's risen from an estimated $30,000 (U.S.) to a loftier $40,000 for the compact four-seater, Bob Kruse, executive director of the program, gave no specifics on its estimated MSRP, but said the price will depend in part on the cost of gas.
"We're not wishing for higher petroleum costs, but the economic viability of what we're doing only gets greater with higher fuel prices," he said. The plan to launch the car in November, 2010, is on schedule. "$1.50 gallon gas is not helping our business case."
The average price of regular gas in the United States was actually $1.96 a gallon earlier this week, according to American government figures.

GM is not sure what the price of the Volt will be, Kruse said, nor has the company established whether it will lease the battery separately from the vehicle itself, as Nissan plans to do with its all-electric vehicle, which is to go on limited sale next year.
"Part of the price will be dependent on fuel costs at the time, which will impact the value equation the Volt provides."
The focus of the update was on the progress of the lithium-ion battery design — as GM has said, once the battery is ready, the Volt will be ready.
It is the advanced battery technology that allows the Volt to promise up to 64 km (40 miles) of electric-only driving; the small internal combustion engine works only to recharge the batteries, instead of stranding the driver, as would have occurred with GM's ill-fated EV1 all-electric vehicle at the end of its range.

"As we've seen with computers, the technology has progressed to the point where they have morphed from large desktop models, down to the size of your Blackberry," said Denise Gray, director of battery systems engineering, while confirming that design work on generations two and three of the Voltec system is happening alongside the production Volt.
"We're looking for the same types of advancements (and cost reductions) in our electronics."
In a Q&A session afterwards with various media, one astute questioner asked at what temperature those promised 64 kilometres of electric-only driving were verified. Turns out, it was the figure achieved in the normal city cycle testing, said Kruse, which is done at 20 degrees Celsius.
So if your winter commute involves regular sub-zero starts and highway driving, the question isn't whether its electric range will decrease, but by how much?

GM was obviously very sensitive about the fact that the battery cells for the first-generation Volt will come from South Korea, courtesy of LG Chem, especially when it is receiving extra money from both state and federal U.S. governments to produce environmentally advanced vehicles in and around Detroit, on top of the federal bailout money it has and will receive to keep it afloat.
The first batch of pre-production prototypes will be produced later this summer, about 80 of them, soon after the world's largest auto battery facility will open near Detroit, said GM.
Overhyped Nano on sale in India
In yet another media-frenzy-generating launch event, Tata Motor officials confirmed that orders will begin being taken in April in India for the Nano, whose super-low starting price of around $2,900 has media outlets around the world breathlessly reporting on the debut of the "world's cheapest car."
Except it's not the world's cheapest car, it's the world's cheapest new car.
Option it up with various luxuries like a right-side rear view mirror, heating and air conditioning, and a cup holder, and that price moves to 172,360 Indian rupees, according to figures available at tatanano.com, or the equivalent of $4,152.
Still, offering any new vehicle at such a low price is a remarkable achievement, even if the lack of airbags and emissions controls would not allow the Nano as is to be sold in most developed markets, and certainly not in regulation-heavy North America.

"The Nano represents the spirit of breaking conventional barriers," said Tata Motors chairman Ratan Tata. "It will provide safe, affordable, four-wheel transportation to families who till now have not been able to own a car." Or at least a new car.
The Nano offers a 35-hp. two-cylinder engine, coupled to a four-speed manual transmission, with a top speed of 105 km/h, for a published estimate of 33 seconds for the small four-seat hatchback to reach 100 km/h.
Plans are in the works to sell an upgraded version of this car to parts of Europe by 2011, the company said; it would a larger 90-hp, three-cylinder engine, available five-speed automatic, dual airbags, ABS and stability control, with a target starting price still under $5,000 (U.S.).
"Driven mainly by the change in demand that we see elsewhere in the world, we suddenly felt we had a product that could be of considerable interest as a low-cost product in western Europe, eastern Europe, the U.K. and even the U.S.," Tata told Reuters at this week's event.

Women's Car of the Year award launched
Female automotive journalists are a relative rarity in this business, but a group of 10 women auto writers from around the world will launch the first Women's Car of the Year award.
The initial group includes two journalists from Canada, as well as India, South Africa, the U.K., Australia and Europe.
"Most awards are chosen by a huge majority of men who tend to view cars differently to women," said Sandy Myhre, the New Zealand-based journalist who initiated the award.
"This award reflects changing times when you consider that today women make the final decision in as much as 85 per cent of all cars sold," according to Myhre.
After noticing that the 2007 World Car of the Year award's 43-member jury of international auto journalists did not contain one woman, Myhre helped organize a Women's COTY program in New Zealand last year, an award which went to the Volkswagen Passat BlueMotion (diesel) wagon.
"Newton-metres [or lb-ft] of torque weren't even considered, but we did look at drivability and sexiness," for those awards, as well as its carbon footprint, family friendliness, value, and, "of course," the range of colours, said Myhre.
Infiniti M to become brand's first hybrid
Playing some serious catch-up to arch-rival Lexus, Infiniti plans to start selling its own hybrid designs in North America next year, starting with its mid-size M sedans, Japan's Nikkei business daily reports.

While the Altima now offers a hybrid option, the hybrid uses leased Toyota hybrid technology, while Nissan, Japan's third-largest auto maker, struggles to come out with its own hybrid designs to rival those of Toyota and Honda.
Other luxury players are starting to jump into the hybrid market as well, with BMW and Mercedes-Benz both planning hybrid SUVs for North America and Europe this year, as well as the Mercedes-Benz S400 BlueHybrid that will compete with Lexus' top-line LS600hl.
